Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (France 1755 - 1842) was a French painter and is recognized as the most famous female painter of the 18th century. She was the daughter of a portraitist and fan painter, Louis Vigée, from whom she received her first instruction. She enjoyed rapid success as a portraitist of high society, thanks to the naturalness and vitality of her portraits. She became Marie-Antoinette's official portraitist, and thanks to Queen Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture in Paris. Vigée Le Brun was the most sought-after portrait painter of her time. She produced over 900 paintings, including numerous self-portraits and portraits of her friend Marie-Antoinette.
