Louis XV Style Cabaret Table With Country Trophies, 19th Century.
Charming Louis XV-style cabaret table made of oak during the 19th century.
Rectangular in shape, it features an elegant bowl top, characteristic of this type of furniture designed for serving hot drinks. Made of oak, it is painted in the imitation of dark veined marble. The decoration, executed in black, brown and ochre tones, is enlivened by sinuous light veins evoking the precious marbles used in the refined interiors of the 17th and 18th centuries. A quarter-round molding, accompanied by a slight fillet, harmoniously emphasizes the edge of the top while lightening its profile.
The curved belt is carved in bas-relief with foliage and flowers framing two different allegorical trophies. One side features a musical trophy composed of a lyre, lute and hunting horn. The other features a harvest trophy with a sheaf of wheat and a scythe. These pastoral-inspired decorations evoke the pleasures of music, galant celebrations, abundant harvests and the idealized vision of country life so popular in 18th-century decorative arts.
The table opens with two opposite side drawers, mounted with dovetails and retaining their brass pull knobs on rosettes. This device was used to store accessories for serving tea, coffee or chocolate, beverages whose consumption boomed from the 18th century onwards.
It stands on four elegantly arched legs finished with small carved hooves evoking deer feet. The whole piece is made of oak and finished in a pleasant ochre patina that highlights the sculptural form and quality of the workmanship.
So-called "cabaret" tables appeared at the end of the 17th century and underwent significant development in the 18th century. Their bowl-shaped top, designed to receive and display a service, made it easier to carry cups, teapots and accessories, while limiting the risk of falling. They took their place in salons, boudoirs and private apartments, where they accompanied the new uses associated with exotic drinks, which were very much in vogue at the time.
Dimensions: Height: 73 cm Width: 60 cm Depth: 50.5 cm
Very good condition.
