Untitled - "Objet du couchant", 1979Watercolor on paper
Signed and dated on the back "Daniel Pommereulle 31.9.79"
Dimensions: 49cm x 35cm

This rare, poetic work belongs to the series of small watercolors that Daniel Pommereulle produced in 1979 in the Camargue. Alone in front of his bedroom window, the artist captured the changing light of sunset and transfigured it into a luminous, minimalist vision.

On a deep blue gradient background, an oblong orange-yellow shape seems to float, surrounded by a vaporous, almost spectral halo. The sober composition exudes a meditative intensity and an almost mystical presence of light.

This small-format piece testifies to an intimate and sensitive period in Pommereulle's work, when the painter explored the boundary between figuration and abstraction, between observed reality and inner vision. The work is presented in a handsome modern light wood frame with passe-partout.

ProvenanceAnne de Clippel Collection, Brussels- private Brussels collection renowned for its avant-garde pieces from the 1960s-1980s).

ConditionVery good condition. The watercolor is well preserved, with no visible alterations to the color or paper.

Artist biography
Daniel Pommereulle (1937-2003) is one of the most singular and secretive figures of the French avant-garde in the second half of the 20th century. Painter, sculptor, filmmaker, performer and poet, he set out on a radical and personal path, far removed from fashion.Born in 1937, he was marked by his experience of the Algerian war. Back in Paris, he frequented Saint-Germain-des-Prés circles and took part in happenings in the early 1960s.

Alain Jouffroy associated him with the "Objecteurs" group in 1965. His dandy role in Éric Rohmer's La Collectionneuse (1967) made him a household name in New Wave circles. He made two important films with the Zanzibar group: One More Time (1968) and Vite (1969), both hypnotic and radical works. In the 1970s, he developed the emblematic Objets de Prémonition series (shiny blades encircling objects).

From the 1980s, he created the glass sculptures in the "Praise and Martyrdom of Glass" series. At the same time, he continued to paint and work on paper with great freedom, producing works of rare luminous and spiritual intensity, such as this watercolor from 1979.For a long time relatively confidential, his work has enjoyed a major revival in recent years, with retrospectives, tributes at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris (2024) and work in progress on his catalog raisonné by Galerie Christophe Gaillard.

The Camargue watercolor series - "Objet du couchant" (1979)In 1979,

Daniel Pommereulle, bedridden in his room in the Camargue, produced a series of small-format watercolors directly inspired by the sunset he observed through his window.

These works, often referred to under the generic name of "Objet du couchant", represent a particularly intimate and luminous moment in his production. In them, the artist reduces the motif to its essentials: a floating, irradiated form against a background of night or twilight sky.

These pieces, of great purity, dialogue with Pommereulle's ongoing quest: to capture the speed of light, the vibration of the gaze and the evocative power of the mental image.

One of these watercolors was notably exhibited in 2021 in the exhibition "Dans l'œil de Daniel Pommereulle" at Galerie Christophe Gaillard.
