Antique Wooden Walking Stick With Metal Inlays – Maghreb, First Half Of The 20th Century
A walking stick made of very dense black wood, similar to ebony but significantly lighter and less dense than true ebony. It features a carefully turned, curved tourniquet-style handle. The shaft, also turned, is marked by decorative rings and is entirely adorned with a pattern of metal inlays arranged in regular geometric motifs.
The decoration is executed using a traditional Maghreb inlay technique involving micro-nails made of nickel silver. Each element is inserted one by one into tiny slots previously drilled by hand, then leveled and polished to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. The regularity of the inlay, the precision of the alignments, and the density of the decoration attest to rigorous artisanal craftsmanship, a legacy of Berber decorative traditions.
This type of workmanship is very characteristic of the workshops of Morocco and Algeria in the first half of the 20th century.
