18th-century Baroque Bronze Tabernacle Door
This object is an antique tabernacle door dating from the early 18th-century Baroque period. It is a work of sacred art, crafted in repoussé on mercury-gilded bronze, and was originally mounted on the front of the tabernacle to house the consecrated hosts within churches. At the center of the composition stands the embossed figure of a radiating monstrance set upon the structure of a Eucharistic chalice. The IHS Monogram: At the heart of the halo, the ancient IHS trigram surmounted by a cross is clearly visible. It represents the sacred name of Jesus (from the abbreviation of the name in ancient Greek or read as the acronym for Iesus Hominum Salvator). The Cherubs: Around the stem of the chalice and on the sides of the striped background are depicted the faces of small winged angels (cherubs) set among Baroque ornamental motifs of volutes and acanthus leaves. The Structure: The shape is arched (curved at the top), typical of this type of liturgical furnishings, and retains on the left side the metal hinges for the hinged opening and on the right side the slot for the lock; The back has been reinforced with a lock and brass sheet metal.
