Two-piece Trumeau In Lacquered And Gilded Wood With Chinoiserie Motifs. Venice, 18th Century.
Two-piece trumeau in lacquered and gilded wood with chinoiserie motifs. Venice, first half of the 18th century.
105 x 54 x 245 cm (3.1 x 2.1 x 9.6 in).
A two-piece trumeau made in Venice around the 1740s and 1750s, particularly prized for its exceptional black lacquer finish with gold decorations featuring typical chinoiserie motifs, embodying the mastery of Venetian cabinetmakers and oriental influences. The lower section features a front with three shaped drawers and a drop-down door, concealing a series of small drawers and secret compartments; the upper section, with two mirrored doors, opens onto a series of compartments and shelves used for porcelain and documents. The cornice, also decorated in the same style as the cabinet, is embellished with exquisite carving, comparable in quality to the finest Venetian gilded mirrors of the time. A further distinguishing feature is the interior, entirely lacquered and painted in imitation tortoiseshell, an extremely rare detail in Venetian production of the period.
Condition report: Good overall condition. The lacquer shows some cracks and wear, more noticeable in frequently used areas. Mirrors have slight oxidation.
