Georges Bissinger Yellow Gold Cameo Necklace Diamonds
Artist: Georges Bissinger
Georges Bissinger Cameo Mounted on Yellow Gold and Diamonds
Yellow gold 18k (750°/°°) sautoir composed of two chains linked together by openwork motifs and an important medallion adorned in its center with a cameo dressed in 3-layer agate depicting a noblewoman from the Renaissance, possibly Elisabeth I or a similar figure from the 16th century. The cameo is enhanced by a surround of tiny rose-cut diamonds and surrounded by larger old European cut diamonds for a total weight of approximately 2.5 to 3 carats.
The cameo is signed on the reverse by Georges Bissinger and dated 1901. Despite the 1901 date on the reverse, we date this cameo to around 1870. Presence of the owl hallmark for 18-carat gold. Georges Bissinger is probably the most important French glypticist of the second half of the 20th century. He worked in the neo-Renaissance style and produced cameos of exceptional quality. He often depicted distinguished historical figures, some of which are preserved in the most prestigious collections in the world such as the V&A Museum in London. He notably worked for several major jewelers of the period including Boucheron, Carlo Giuliano and John Brogden.
Necklace length: 65 cm
Pendant dimensions: 4.8 x 4 cm
Gross weight: 55.28 grams
