Italy - "serpente" Table Lamp (model 599) - Martinelli Luce - 1965
A masterpiece of Italian mid-century lighting, characterized by its fluid swivel arm and biomorphic
minimalist aesthetics. Designed by brand founder Elio Martinelli in
the mid-60s, the Serpente lamp revolutionized the use of new plastics (the
methacrylate) combined with the rigorous geometry of metal. Its dynamic silhouette, evoking the
movement of a snake ready to unfurl, is today part of the permanent collections of
prestigious museums such as the Met or MoMA in New York.
Superb vintage condition. The chrome has an excellent shine with no pitting
major. The Perspex diffuser diffuses a soft, even light, with no cracks or
noticeable discoloration. The fluid 360° rotation system is perfectly functional.Presence of the
original thermoformed black plastic cover with molded relief: "MAX. W. 60' - MOD. 599 -
SERPENTE - MARTINELLI LUCE - DESIGN ELIO MARTINELLI - MOD. DEP. - MADE IN
ITALY" surrounding the publisher's classic graphic logo.
