Originally German and naturalized French in 1883, Théodore Weber was a marine painter appointed official painter of the navy in 1886.
First a pupil of Wilhelm Krause in Berlin in 1854, he continued his training in Paris in 1856 with Eugène Isabey. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1858.
He painted mainly the coast of northern France and Normandy, from Calais, Dunkirk, Boulogne, Gravelines, Saint-Valéry sur Somme, Le Tréport, Dieppe, Fécamp and Trouville. The finesse of his brushwork, with great detail in his compositions and the beautiful color of the sea, show an artist who knew the world of the sea well.
Our painting is located and dated on the back "Le Tréport / 1905". We can indeed make out the Le Tréport jetty, with boats arriving or leaving the port in the distance. On April 7, 1900, Théodore Weber exhibited a painting at the Paris Salon entitled "Bateaux de pêche quittant le Tréport" (number 1351), which may be our painting.
Theodore Weber's works are kept in numerous museums in France (Dieppe, Dijon and Nice), in England in several museums, and in Australia and Brazil too.
