Grand flat-back ceremonial armchair, Renaissance / Henri II style, late 19th - early 20th century

Grand armchair with flat back, Renaissance / Henri II style, in walnut-stained carved wood, upholstered with a decorative tapestry with troubadour subjects, birds, flowers and plant motifs.

The armchair features an imposing, highly decorative silhouette, with a high, flat rectangular back, a wide seat and two moving scrolled armrests. The carved wood takes up the neo-Renaissance vocabulary: acanthus leaves, flowers, central shell, scrolls, volutes, carved front legs and turned brace. The richly carved front crosspiece reinforces the ensemble's ceremonial character.

The decorative tapestry/stitch upholstery features a scene on the back with a figure in ancient costume, in a troubadour or neo-medieval spirit, accompanied by birds and stylized floral motifs. The seat repeats the same decor, with animals, flowers and scrolls in beige, pink, red, brown, yellow and light green tones.

This type of armchair is in keeping with the historicist taste of the late 19th century, when bourgeois interiors and château decorations revived Renaissance and Henri II forms. More than a simple utility seat, it's a decorative armchair, designed to mark a presence in an entrance hall, a living room, a library, a cabinet of curiosities or an antique interior.

Condition: good overall presentable condition. The chair is stable, with no play reported. Use wear to the wood, minor rubbing, old marks and light wear to the carved parts. The upholstery shows some wear, soiling and faded areas visible on the photos. The seat straps are slack and need to be tightened for optimal comfort. The whole remains very decorative.
