Polychrome Walnut Apostle - Flanders, 15th Century
Carved, polychrome walnut apostle. Our protagonist is depicted full-length, wearing a broad cloak with indented sleeves, punctuated by deep, dynamic, broken and scrolled folds. His face is that of a strong-willed man in the prime of life. Long hair frames his face and falls to his shoulders. A well-trimmed beard finishes the lower part of his face.
Flanders, circa 1480/1500 (restoration to polychromy, both hands missing, traces of xylophagous insects).
