Charles-euphrasie Kuwasseg (1833-1904) Return Of The Fishermen And Landing Of The Fish
Charles-Euphrasie Kuwasseg (1833–1904) – Return of the Fishermen and Landing the Catch, Oil on Panel, c. 1870–1880
This pair of oil on panel paintings by Charles-Euphrasie Kuwasseg immerses the viewer in the maritime life of Brittany and Normandy at the end of the 19th century. With remarkable sensitivity, the artist captures essential yet everyday moments: the return of fishing boats and the unloading of the day’s catch, where the sea and its people meet in a scene both industrious and poetic.
Son of Austrian painter Karl Joseph Kuwasseg, Charles-Euphrasie honed his craft under Jean-Baptiste Durand-Bragger and Eugène Isabey, masters of maritime painting. After a period at sea, he returned to his passion, dedicating himself to port and rural scenes, and collaborating with Théophile Poilpot. His works, regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1855, earned him recognition and awards.
Today, his paintings are featured in prestigious collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen and Rennes, and the Maltwood Art Museum (University of Victoria, Canada).
