Still Life

Important still life with game, Belgian or French school, late XIXᵉ - early XXᵉ century

Large-format oil on canvas (127 × 92 cm), depicting a rich hunting trophy consisting of a hare, pheasants, wild ducks, fruit and mushrooms arranged on a stone entablature.

This composition is in the tradition of the large hunting still lifes developed by the Flemish and Belgian schools. The treatment of plumage, fur and various materials reveals meticulous execution and genuine technical mastery. The whole is enlivened by a warm palette and subtle use of light and shadow.

Thanks to its large dimensions and decorative character, this type of painting was destined for the elegant interiors of the Belle Époque, be they mansions, bourgeois residences or country estates.

The work is presented in an antique molded and gilded wooden frame, fully contributing to its enhancement.

The painting bears a signature in the lower right-hand corner. Despite its partial wear, it appears to read: "E.Van. ... selaer", the identification of the artist remaining unknown to this day.

Please note: the presence of old restorations and reversals visible in certain areas of the canvas, consistent with the age of the work and visible on the presentation photographs.

A fine decorative and collector's piece, representative of the taste for hunting scenes and prestigious still lifes of the late XIXᵉ century.
