Important Pedestal Clock In Champlevé Enamel, Onyx, Marble, Late 19th Century

Provenance and attribution
Important pedestal-shaped parquet clock from the French decorative production of the second half of the 19th century. The object is in keeping with the eclectic Parisian taste of the end of the century, combining Renaissance references, neo-classical vocabulary and the polychrome richness of champlevé enamels. No maker's name is visible on the photographs submitted; the attribution must therefore remain that of a French work from the late 19th century, in the spirit of the great decorative clockwork productions in onyx, gilt bronze and enamels.

Description
The clock features a vertical architecture, designed as a small decorative monument. The rectangular base in veined red marble supports a molded base adorned with a bronze frieze. Two front columns, decorated with polychrome enamels and stylized motifs of foliage, palmettes and geometric ornamentation, frame the exposed pendulum. The balance is completed by a large bronze sunburst at the center of the composition. The upper part houses a circular dial with Arabic numerals, surrounded by enamel decoration and a bronze bezel. The center of the dial itself is enamelled with a floral motif. The sides of the case also feature enamelled circular medallions, while the upper cornice is adorned with champlevé enamel lambrequins, pendants and spandrels. The whole rests on a highly decorative alternation of translucent green onyx, red marble and gilded bronzes.

Technique and materials
Structure in green onyx, veined red marble, gilded or patinated bronze, polychrome enamels and watchmaking mechanical elements. The enamelled parts are particularly prominent on the columns, borders, side medallions and dial decoration. The quality lies in the architectural effect of the whole, in the contrast between the natural stones and the blue, white, black and turquoise enamels, as well as in the highly ornamental character of the mounts.

Dating
Late 19th century, circa 1880-1900. This dating is consistent with the use of onyx in French furniture and objets d'art of this period, with the gilded bronze mounts with historicist decor and with the eclectic taste for champlevé enamels of Renaissance and orientalist inspiration.

Condition
Condition consistent with the age and composite nature of the object. Wear to gilding, oxidation, small marks, chips, restorations or possible missing stones and enamels. Onyx veins, natural cracks and variations in hue are part of the material's appearance.

Use and purpose
Large-format decorative piece, intended for classic, eclectic interiors or gallery staging. With its pedestal architecture, precious materials and polychrome decoration, it can be presented on its own as a central object, in a living room, library, hall or collection space.
