Ceramics From A Shipwreck
Set of 13 ceramics from the Sardinaux wreck in Fréjus, commissioned by Luc d'Aquin, bishop of Fréjus, in brown and beige glazed earthenware, some with traces of concretions. Probably between 1681 and 1700 Diameter: 12 to 17.5 cm Luc d'Aquin was a well-known figure: his father Louis was first physician to the Queen of England, and his brother Antoine to Louis XIV. Despite his Jewish origins, he was appointed bishop of Saint-Paul des Trois-Châteaux, then Fréjus in 1681. The boat was a tartane some ten meters long, whose design is known from Jouve's album published in 1675. At the time of sinking, the boat was so heavily laden that the helmsman had only a metre to manoeuvre it.
