Bernard AROSTEGUY (1887-1956)
Oil on wood, signed lower right. Fort de France.
Panel measures 50 x 33 cm.
Frame measures 64 x 47 cm.
Biography:
Bernard Arosteguy was born in Itxassou, in the French Basque Country, on January 18, 1887. He was ordained a priest on October 8, 1912 and sent to Spanish Guinea to begin his missionary work. Seven years later, Arosteguy was called to lead the mission in Martinique. It was here that he began painting in earnest. In 1942, he befriended the painter de la Nezière, whose style, characterized by bright colors and broad strokes, influenced Arosteguy. Having spent his entire life under the tropical sun, it's hardly surprising that Arosteguy's work has such a luminous quality.
