Ancient & charming portrait depicting Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, Duc du Maine (1670-1736), legitimized son of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan.
The young prince is shown in bust form, dressed in rich fleur-de-lys armor adorned with gilding and elegant white drapery.
This oil on oak panel shows some small paint chips.
On the reverse remains an old handwritten label identifying the figure as "Le Duc du Maine, legitimate son of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan",.

LLouis-Auguste de Bourbon, Duc du Maine (1670-1736), was the most favored of the legitimate children of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. Raised at the court of Versailles, he received important military and honorary appointments. The Sun King showed him special affection throughout his life, making the Duc du Maine one of the most influential personalities of the late Grand Siècle.
