Important Curved Lid Oak Travel Chest With Forged Fittings, Late 18th - Early 20th Century
Large, elegant blond oak travel chest with strongly domed lid, Central European work from the late 18th or early 19th century.
This remarkable antique trunk retains all its beautiful original wrought-iron fittings, with cut-out decoration of openwork heart-shaped motifs, elegantly emphasizing the line of the domed lid. The side carrying handles testify to its vocation as a travel or transport chest.
The box is assembled with dovetails and features a sturdy, meticulous construction. The interior, which has remained very authentic, retains its original compartmentalization allowing storage of personal belongings or linen.
The cabinet rests on a dovetailed base.
The piece rests on a molded base and shows a beautiful old oak patina, with warm, deep shades. The antique lock is missing, but a more recent lock is present and can be reassembled if desired.
Both decorative and functional, this large-sized chest will find its place in both an old home and a contemporary interior, as a storage chest, linen chest or end-of-bed chest.
An unusual piece of character, seductive for its generous proportions, the quality of its ironwork and its authenticity.
