Sewing Special: 19th Century Tartan Thread Winder Box

Made from sycamore wood and covered with Caledonia tartan paper, this round thread winder is designed for six spools of thread, so it's a good size. It's one of those objects commonly known as "Mauchline Ware" or simply "Tartans". They were made in the Scottish town of Mauchline, where a multitude of small decorative or everyday objects were produced, rarely large pieces. They were all covered with a clan paper and as there are 147 different ones, there was plenty of choice, even if it's the best-known ones that are most often found, such as Calédonie, Stuart, MCPherson, Campbell, Buchanan...
