édith Berger (1900 - 1994) Lambs At Rest Pastel And Charcoal On Paper
Trained at the Beaux-Arts de Grenoble, then at the École nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, Édith Berger settled permanently in Lalley in the Trièves in 1934, where she became a close and faithful painter for sixty years. Equally adept at oil, pastel, charcoal and linocut, she favored ordinary attitudes and actions captured on the spot - work in the fields, animals at rest, scenes of country life. Her friend Jean Giono defined her in 1948 as "the painter of daily bread".
