Antwerp 1678-1680 Joseph I Hennekin Baroque Silver And Vermeil Chalice
Artist: Joseph I Hennekin Actif 1674-1718
Sumptuous Louis XIV period baroque chalice in solid silver and vermeil. Its style and decoration are typical of the flamboyant Baroque of the Counter-Reformation, as it was known in the former Southern Netherlands under the Spanish Habsburgs. This formidable chalice is in an excellent state of preservation. The Antwerp city hallmarks (one hand) and the vintage hallmark are clearly legible. The master silversmith's mark, an orb surmounted by a cross, is a little less so.
More than forty works by Joseph Hennekin have been catalogued to date, with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam possessing a magnificent series of six candlesticks.
The chalice weighs close to a kilo of silver.
