Michel Fronti (1862-1936) On The Terrace Of The Villa Maud On The Corniche, Marseilles
Artist: Michel Fronti (1862-1936)
Time seems to stand still, the gentle pace of life and the lovely panorama of Marseille harbor as seen from the famous Villa Maud by the painter Michel Fronti.
The work, in good condition, is a first draft in oil on canvas and is presented in a handsome Louis XIV-style frame with dedicated patina measuring 40 cm by 51 cm and 24.5 cm by 35 cm for the painting alone.
It depicts the terrace of Villa Maud overlooking the sea Corniche Kennedy, a woman, perhaps the music-hall star Gaby Deslys, who bought the house in 1918, is leaning against a railing, two dogs at her side.
Legend has it that the star threw all her jewels into the sea...
Marseillais renamed the house Villa de Gaby Deslys, or simply Villa Gaby.
The work is signed, located and dated 1918 lower right.
A student of Lagier in Marseille, and of Benjamin Constant and Lefebvre in Paris,
he participated in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1889 to 1935.
While his first submission was a painting (L'Œuvre de la "Bouchée de pain à Marseille," in 1889, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille), he subsequently exhibited only pastels (Melle Harriet Strasy, from the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Messaline, 1911).
He received an honorable mention in 1920 (reclining woman, nude study, pastel)
and a silver medal in 1922 with Indolence (pastel). Finally, he also frequented
the Salon des Artistes Marseillais, and later that of the Société des Artistes Provençaux. In Marseille, the Musée Cantini houses several of his
works: Le repos, Maison dans un jardin, Mme Maurice Hubert (1914).
