Workshop of Perin del Vaga (Florence 1501 - Rome 1547) - The Flagellation of Christ.
71.5 x 59.5 cm (without frame) - 89 x 76 cm (with frame).
Oil on panel, in an antique 17th-century carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting reproduces the composition by Perin del Vaga (Florence 1501 - Rome 1547) held at the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan.
The composition closely follows the original invention by Perin del Vaga, a Florentine painter trained in Raphael's circle and one of the leading figures of Roman Mannerism. Christ, crowned with thorns and draped in a white cloth, stands at the centre of the scene, surrounded by three tormentors rendered with vigorous, dynamic poses. The quality of execution, the luminous treatment of Christ's figure, and the sculptural solidity of the figures point to a workshop of considerable skill, active within the master's immediate circle.
