Pair Of Seagulls, Rulas, Art Deco, 1920s-1930s.
Artist: Rulas
Sculpture in patinated metal alloy (regula) on a marble base. The sculpture depicts a pair of seagulls caught in flight above a foaming wave. The composition is a perfect example of Art Deco aesthetics: it is based on aerodynamic, flowing lines and seeks to convey the momentum and energy of movement. On the backs and outsides of the birds' wings, the feathers are neatly textured and layered. The original patina is striking, dominated by deep shades of olive green (patina effect) interlaced with warm brown. The composition stands on a thick, original oval base in black marble with irregular white veins.
Art deco, 1920s-1930s. Signed on the base: "Rulas".
Height 61 cm, base 58 x 19 cm.
Very good condition.
Rulas (who appears under the name Cham Rulas in some auction catalogs and directories) was an enigmatic artist, an emblematic figure of the Parisian artistic milieu of the Art Deco period (active between 1920 and 1939). Rulas was a typical animalist - a sculptor who devoted his work to the animal world; we know of his sculptures of predatory felines (panthers, tigers) or birds. His works are characterized by a desire to convey momentum, speed and aerodynamics. Instead of faithfully reproducing anatomy, Rulas synthesized forms: he transformed the feathers and muscles of animals into geometric, flowing lines, which harmonized perfectly with the modern interior architecture of the 1930s.
