‘views Of Naples’ – A Pair Of Tempera Paintings On Paper.

A pair of tempera paintings on paper, late 19th–early 20th century, depicting classic views of the Gulf of Naples. The works are part of the Neapolitan landscape painting tradition that emerged in the 19th century for travelers on the Grand Tour, distinguished by the clarity of the landscape and the freshness of the colors.

In the first sheet, the view is taken from the sea: in the foreground, rowing boats and a steamship—perhaps the Real Ferdinando I—are moving. In the background, the coastal city emerges with Castel dell’Ovo, the hill of San Martino topped by Castel Sant’Elmo, and, on the right, the smoking Mount Vesuvius.

In the second sheet, the scene shows the wide arc of the gulf with Vesuvius on the left and the outlines of the Phlegraean coast on the right. Both compositions are bordered by the classic black perimeter margin of the period.

Dimensions: Approximately 31 x 22 cm each.
Condition: Good; sheets intact, unmounted, and stored in a folder. The painted surface is well-preserved with slight and normal abrasions concentrated on the outer black border.
