The work blends the realism typical of Flemish painters working in Italy with local chromatic sensibility. The composition centers on the figure of a wayfarer occupying the central part, depicted with great care as he leads a mule with finely detailed harness. To the right lies the most anecdotal portion of the painting, where a barefoot figure stands out on a raised block; his pose draws the gazes of the surrounding figures, while at their feet, a basket brimming with eggs and game enriches the iconographic narrative—elements of folk still life faithful to 17th-century realist painting. In the background on the left, the Roman countryside features a fortified building with a circular tower beneath a sky streaked with clouds. The attribution on the reverse attributes the canvas to Cerquozzi, whose influence is evident in the rendering of the shadows and the folk subjects.
