It depicts a village street in Provence, certainly in thearound the Etang de Berre, where the artist was a regular visitor.

Charles Malfroy is in the post-impressionist tradition of Jean-Baptiste Olive.
Attracted by the light of Mediterranean ports, he excelled in views of the Côte d'Azur and Bouches-du-Rhône, in particular the port of Martigues andvarious ports around the Etang de Berre, Istres, Port de Bouc etc.
He also painted a few pictures of Venice.
He demonstrates virtuosity in atmospheric effects, with a talentas a colorist.
At the 1894 Salon des Artistes Français, he exhibited a marine entitled "En Provence"
