Empire-period Painted Sheet Metal And Gilt Bronze Terminal Clock.

Beautiful Empire-period "borne" clock in sheet metal painted to imitate cherry-red marble, richly adorned with very finely chased and gilded bronze sconces.

This pedestal-shaped model ( cf Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet, Pendules du Mobilier National 1800-1870, p.104 ) belongs to the family of terminal clocks then widespread and popular in the early 19th century.

Here, the immaculate white enamel circular dial, signed Calame in Paris, is adorned with Roman numerals and fine gilded bronze hands. It is framed by a bezel with a row of very fine pearls and rais-de-coeur leaves.

The decorative elements in finely chased and gilded bronze echo the aesthetic vocabulary of Napoleon I's Empire:
the elongated lion, symbol of strength
-the stars
-a wide palmette with openwork veins, above which are perfectly symmetrical volutes (large and small) adorned with acanthus leaves and ending in circular paterae decorated with flowers and burst pomegranates.
-the caduceus of the god Hermes on either side.

This beautiful ensemble rests on four winged lion feet, symbolizing griffins, fabulous animals with lion bodies and eagle wings. They illustrate the alliance of earth and air, the human and the divine, expressing both strength and wisdom.

Wire movement, in working order.

Gorgeous original mercury gilding.

Empire period, early 19th century.
