Rouen 1743-1745, Sterling Silver , Jean-baptiste Clavier, Pair Of Candlesticks
Artist: Jean-baptiste Clavier Reçu Maître En 1731
Rare pair of Louis XV period solid silver torches from Rouen.
They are a pair of "à pans" torches on a hexagonal plan, a very popular model in the mid-eighteenth century.
For some reason, Rouen silverware dating from the ancien régime is very rare on the market. The only objects to be found are tastevins, often engraved with humorous scenes.
This pair is in good condition, although it shows some of the usual signs of wear.
The hallmarks are very legible and well struck. The master mark is that of Jean-Baptiste Clavier, received as master in 1731. The jurande mark is for the period 1743-45. They weigh 600 grams.
The bobèches are perfectly matched, but most probably not the original ones.
The umbilicus of each torch is engraved with a period monogram in the style of Charles Mavelot, topped by a marquis's crown.
