Pair Of Small Oils Attributed To Jean Baptiste Pillement

Artist: Jean Baptiste Pillement

Jean-Baptiste Pillement (attributed to)

Pair of animated landscapes

Late 18thᵉ century

Painting on paper

14.5 × 8.5 cm each

Charming pair of small pastoral landscapes attributed to Jean-Baptiste Pillement, master of French rococo decorative landscape. These delicate compositions perfectly illustrate the poetic and imaginative world developed by the artist during his European career.

The first scene depicts a mountainous, wooded landscape crossed by a stream. In the foreground, several figures accompany pack animals laden with bundles, while a hunting dog enlivens the bank. To the left, a waterfall cascades between shady rocks and lightly-treated vegetation. In the background, architectural structures half-drowned in mist stand out against a cloudy, bluish-grey sky. The whole gives off a picturesque, theatrical atmosphere characteristic of Pillement.

The second composition offers a calmer, brighter vision of a lakeside landscape. A vast expanse of water occupies center stage, enlivened by several boats and small figures elegantly arranged on the banks. An isolated tower looms in the distance, shrouded in a light mist, while a tall tree in dark tones structures the left-hand side of the composition. The palette, dominated by silvery blues, tender greens and rosy hues, lends the work an atmospheric softness typical of the artist's fantasy landscapes.

Both oils are framed in gilded Louis XVI baguettes with a plais marked J.PILEMENT

These two paintings testify to the XVIIIᵉ century's refined taste for idealized landscapes blending nature, imaginary ruins and pastoral scenes. The finesse of the brushstrokes, the vaporous treatment of distant scenes and the delicacy of the colors clearly link these works to the corpus of Jean-Baptiste Pillement, whose compositions had a lasting influence on European decorative arts.
