Messenger Box 15th Century
Galerie L'Atrium is privileged to present this rare and superb messenger box dating from the late 15th century (late Gothic period). Originating from a private collection, it is a truly exceptional, high-security piece, destined for enthusiasts and discerning collectors of the Haute Époque.
A remarkable work of forging and locksmithing: This box is distinguished by the elegance and technical ingenuity of its design. The wrought-iron structure features a rich openwork and punched decoration with diamond and lattice motifs. The spectacular double-anchored locking system immediately catches the eye. It features an imposing single two-pronged hasp (or double barb), superbly carved and bearing witness to the exceptional file workmanship typical of late medieval master locksmiths.
The refinement of this mechanism lies in the presence of a lock entry cover (or "secret"). Cleverly concealed in the center of the lock plate in the form of a grooved tongue between the two anchoring slots, it protected and concealed access to the keyhole.
An extremely rare state of preservation: The real asset of this piece lies in its surface condition. Unusually for a utilitarian object of this period, the box retains much of its original gilding. The gold shows beautifully through the geometric patterns of the reperforated iron, providing a striking contrast and a beautiful, luminous patina.
Features and finishes:
Four side anchoring rings (two on each side), highlighting its primary function as a messenger box designed to be securely stowed during transport.
The interior, revealed when the heavy lid is opened, is lined with a warm purple velvet, highlighting the imposing mechanics of the internal lockwork.
A visually powerful piece, combining the roughness and ingenuity of wrought iron with the preciousness of its antique gilding.
