Christ The Soldier Painting After Jean Joseph Weerts
The painting presented here is in good overall condition. The canvas is slightly relaxed.
Size 65x40cm.
Quality work from the early 20th century.
Like the original painting, the work presented echoes the figure of the Wounded Cuirassier of 1814 painted by Géricault in an equivalent format. After France's defeat at the hands of the Prussians in 1870, and in the midst of the Dreyfus affair, Weerts' work appealed to young Sorbonne students to do their patriotic duty. The death of the cuirassier thrown to the ground is answered by the sacrifice of Christ nailed to the cross, in a rhetoric that would be widely taken up in works commemorating the First World War.
