Historical context:
During the First World War, the Netherlands was neutral. In October 1914, when Antwerp fell, tens of thousands of Belgian soldiers (as well as a few British sailors) crossed the Dutch border to avoid being taken prisoner by the Germans.Under the international neutrality laws of the time, the Netherlands had to disarm and intern these soldiers until the end of the war so that they would not return to combat. Camp de Zeist (located in Soesterberg) was one of the main camps housing these Belgian soldiers.
