Peter Busch (1861-1942) - View Of San Francisco Bay - Oil On Canvas
Oil on canvas pasted on strong cardboard, signed lower left Peter Busch (1861-1942).
Charming seascape by Danish-born painter Peter Busch depicting San Francisco Bay in a soft, misty atmosphere characteristic of late 19th-century American West Coast tonalist and impressionist painting.
In the foreground, a solitary rowboat floats peacefully on silvery water, while in the background, the relief is bathed in a warm, diffused light. The artist subtly plays with transparencies and pastel shades to render the calm, enveloping atmosphere of the Californian coastline.
This work bears witness to Peter Busch's taste for seascapes and light effects. Its delicate execution and harmonious palette recall the influence of European Impressionism, which he discovered during his travels and artistic training.
Peter Busch was born in Denmark.
Born in Denmark in 1861, Peter Johan Valdemar Busch studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen before spending time in Munich and then Paris. Moving to the United States in the 1880s, he worked in San Francisco as a decorative painter and muralist. After the 1906 earthquake, he returned to Europe to pursue a career as a landscape painter. His works, inspired by both Scandinavian and Californian landscapes, are appreciated for their luminous poetry and serene atmosphere.
