Pair Of Antique 16th/17th Century Flemish Relief Carved Oak Biblical Story Panel
A pair of antique relief-carved oak panels, likely of Flemish origin and dating to the late 16th or early 17th century. Each rectangular panel is set within a dark-stained wood frame. The primary material is oak, displaying a dense grain and a dark, aged patina with visible surface wear, small losses, and historical woodworm tracks consistent with age. Both panels feature deep-relief carvings of figurative scenes. The left panel depicts several figures in classical or biblical military attire; one figure is shown with a raised sword, while others stand near a reclining figure on the ground. The background includes architectural elements resembling a fortified city and a stylized tree. The right panel displays two central figures in draped tunics, one leaning over the other, set against a landscape with a large, textured tree and further distant buildings. Both scenes are enclosed by an ornate border of carved scrollwork, volutes, and small grotesque masks at the center of each edge. The carvings show varying depths of relief to create a three-dimensional perspective. Approximate Dimensions & Total Weight:
