A Dog And Cat Micromosaic, Italy, Early 19th Century
Circular micro-mosaic plaque depicting two animals, a dog and probably a cat in a rural landscape. One in orange-brown and white tones, the other white with dark spots are in a halting position ready to defend or attack. The scene unfolds against a natural backdrop of tree trunks in the foreground, opening onto a hillside and a vegetated stream in the background. The plaque is set in a circular gilded brass frame. Micromosaic at sight: 6 cm
The whole is executed with extremely fine tesserae, enabling subtle gradations and highly detailed rendering, particularly in the treatment of the animals' coats and expressions. This quality of execution is characteristic of Roman micro-mosaic production in the early 19th century.
