The Young Violinist
Signed Alfred Duriau.
Alfred Duriau was a Belgian painter, draughtsman and engraver trained at the Mons Academy between 1890 and 1896, notably with Emile Motte and Antoine Bourlard. He then continued his training in Paris in the workshops of Bonnat and Eugène Carrière.
Recognized above all for his talent as an engraver, in 1906 he won the first Grand Prix de Rome for engraving with a work depicting a naked man brandishing an arrow. This prize enabled him to spend two years in Rome, from where he brought back several large drypoint views of the city.
His work focuses mainly on landscapes, still lifes, panoramas of Mons, as well as portraits and figures. He also produced engravings inspired by works by other masters. From 1912 to 1947, he taught at the Mons Academy. Some of his works are now in the Musée de Mons.
