Large Chinese Carved Soapstone Immortals Group, Chinoiserie Sculpture, Early 20th Century
An impressive Chinese carved soapstone group dating to the early 20th century, depicting ten figures inspired by Daoist immortal traditions and arranged across an elaborate pierced cloud-scroll and rockwork base. The composition reflects traditional themes of prosperity, longevity and auspicious blessing, expressed through symbolic attributes including a flute, fan, scrolls, fruit and a fish-carrying boy.
The sculpture is executed in variegated soapstone and related soft hardstones in cream, celadon-green, russet and dark tones. Particularly attractive is the contrast between the pale polished figures and the darker pierced rockwork centrepiece, which gives the group depth and dramatic visual presence.
Large decorative hardstone groups of this type were produced as statement interior objects and remain highly desirable for collectors of Chinese export art and Chinoiserie interiors. The combination of layered carving, multiple figures and varied stone colours gives the piece strong decorative impact.
