Betel Case - Masuane (ceram, Indonesia)
Artist: Collecte De Terrain
Braided vegetable fibers and engraved wooden element - 20th century
Jean-Pierre Dutilleux Collection – field collection
PUBLISHED COPY – LARGE FORMAT WITH ENGRAVED DECORATION
Important elongated betel case, made of braided vegetable fibers with wide strands, reinforced by a carved and engraved wooden upper element.
With a remarkable length of 40 cm, this copy is distinguished by its uncommon format as well as by the presence of hand-incised patterns, visible on the wooden part. These engravings, irregular and old, testify to a personalization of the object, possibly linked to its owner or to a specific use.
Intended for the transport of what was necessary for chewing the betel - a central practice in Southeast Asian societies - this object was worn on a daily basis, as indicated by the robustness of its structure and its marked patina of use.
The quality of the braiding, the presence of an engraved decoration and the unusual scale of the room give this object a strong ethnographic presence, going beyond simple utilitarian status.
This case is the copy reproduced in Jean-Pierre Dutilleux's reference work, TRIBES - The First People, in the section devoted to the Masuane de Ceram (Indonesia).
