Note: Almehs were dancers, singers, and musicians present in harems. Considered learned and artistic, they were regarded as being of high social rank. In Egypt, they were considered descendants of the priestesses of Isis. In Arabic, alami means "she who knows" or "she who has learned." Our painting is therefore the portrait of a woman of wisdom and erudition.
