Penial Stuff
PENIAL CASE (KOTÉKA)
Papua New Guinea
Jean-Pierre Dutilleux Collection
Rare penial case (kotéka) in organic material, of elongated and slightly curved shape, showing a deep and homogeneous ancient patina. The distal end terminates in a characteristic natural hook, while the base is reinforced by finely executed plant braiding, providing support and solidity.
An ancient cord, still in place, allowed the object to be secured and worn.
These objects, emblematic of the cultures of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, are more than mere clothing accessories: they are strong identity, social and aesthetic markers, whose shape, size and patina reflect the status and age of their wearer.
