Antique Embroidered Silk Valance
Antique silk valance, embellished with applied elements and layered textiles.
A base of burgundy moiré silk is overlaid with a second yellow damask silk, embroidered in needle painting with an opulent floral motif of roses and foliage; the whole composition is further enhanced with applied fabric ribbons.
Noteworthy details:
1-The two ends are asymmetrical, a characteristic feature of period handcrafted pieces.
2-The heavy internal jute lining, used as structural reinforcement, has cut into the silk along the entire perimeter, causing general weakening of the edges. This phenomenon is very common in antique textiles lined with rigid materials.
