Portrait Of A Little Girl With Her Dolls, Oil On Canvas, Circa 1840
This oil on canvas is truly original. Seated in a green velvet armchair, the life-size little girl holds a large doll in her arms, watching her. She wears the same elegant clothes and a straw hat.
On a pedestal table, a small wooden doll lies in pieces, her clothes beside her, she is abandoned for this new arrival who becomes the favorite!
The little girl's face is serious, attentive and seems to be staring at the painter and now at us.......The workmanship of this painting is provincial, but the overall colors, costumes and details make this portrait utterly charming.
This large canvas is in very fine, unrestored condition, with the original varnish. The period frame is gilded and in good condition, despite two small chips in the upper spandrels.
