In this striking small format, Claude Dalbanne deploys a synthetic and boldly modernist vision of the Breton landscape: fields geometrized in flat tones of brown, ochre and dark green, the sea reduced to a band of intense blue, black lines encircling forms in the manner of a cloisonné. The technique combines watercolor with the reserves of white paper, enhanced by a nervous ink line that structures the composition in facets akin to decorative cubism.

The work is part of a pivotal moment in Dalbanne's career. In 1920, he took part in the founding of the Ziniars group, and his work then took a modernist cubist turn, with a strong interest in the geometrization of forms. The Breton sojourns of this period were a field of experimentation for this new vision, and we know of other works of the same spirit produced in Brittany during the same period.

Claudius, known as Claude, Dalbanne trained with Tony Tollet at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon, before moving to Paris to complete his training at the Académie Julian, where he benefited from the advice of Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. From the beginning of the 20th century, he exhibited in Paris and Lyon, and worked with La Sirène publishing house, which published works by Apollinaire, Cendrars and Cocteau, with illustrations by Picasso, Léger and Dufy.

Parallel to his work as a painter and engraver, he established himself as a major figure in Lyon scholarship: curator of the Musée Gadagne from 1936 to 1955, founder of the Musée des arts de la marionnette in 1950, he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1953. His painted works are represented at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.
