The Carabiniers:Their origins date back to the middle of the xvie century, when they were formed to be elite units of the light cavalry, armed with carbines. They then progressed to semi-autonomous status during the xviiie century. They did not become independent units until 1788, when two carabinieri regiments were established. From the wars of the Revolution onwards, they became the elite heavy cavalry regiments of the French army, making their mark during the wars of the First and Second Empire, before being disbanded in 1871 after the fall of the latter.
