Paul Lecomte seems to have had a particular penchant for the landscapes of Mortefontaine, since another watercolor published here is also inspired by landscapes in this region. But here, the artist focuses on a very specific landscape, typical of this part of the Ermenonville forest north of Paris: stretches of white sand, hence the watercolor's title, "Les Sables Blancs", which is also the name of a specific place. Here we find the artist's characteristic penchant for a composition that is always rigorous and evocative; here he emphasizes the powerful horizontal lines of this landscape.
Another of these characteristics is the presence of bird silhouettes in the sky. They are often painted in this way in Paul Lecomte's works and almost constitute a signature.

Paul Lecomte was born in Paris on April 15, 1842. He was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes.
He is considered one of the last quality representatives of the Barbizon School.
He was a pupil of the painter Émile Lambinet (1813-1877), but it is the influences of Camille Corot and Henri Harpignies that most mark the development of his style.
His art is deeply influenced by Japonism, as is that of his contemporary Claude Monet.
He painted in Brittany, Normandy and the south of France, but also in England, where he also exhibited his work.
He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1868, winning various medals and distinctions.
He died in Paris on March 21, 1920.
Works by him are in the Louvre and Petit Palais museums in Paris, the Beaux-Arts museum in Mulhouse and the Baron-Martin museum in Gray.
