Devotional Pendant, Depicting The Virgin Mary And St. Joseph With The Christ Child. Gold, Etc.
Devotional pendant, depicting the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph with the Christ Child. Gold, etc. Probably Spain, 18th century.
Gold-framed devotional medallion, adorned with elements clearly influenced by French neoclassical styles (vases at the top, garlands with ribbons, plant motifs, etc.). One side depicts the Virgin Mary, hands clasped to her chest in prayer. The other shows St. Joseph with Baby Jesus, identifiable by his flowery staff. The carved wooden beads are similar to those used in rosaries of the Mallorcan school, decorated with fine parallel carved lines and finished in a very dark hue. The composition of the two religious figurative scenes is reminiscent of Rococo works in its colors, but also shows a clear influence of Spanish Baroque models. -
