Magu With A Deer, China, Qing Dynasty, 19th-20th Century.
This White China (Dehua) porcelain figurine represents the Taoist immortal goddess Magu, revered as the patron saint of longevity. The goddess is accompanied by a deer, which in Chinese iconography symbolizes prosperity and success, and a woven basket filled with flowers or fruit (probably immortality peaches). Her face features subtle, delicately drawn features, with half-closed eyelids; her hair is meticulously pulled up into a high bun, adorned with small flowers. The figure is dressed in a flowing, multi-layered robe of harmonious lines, with a characteristic wide, decorative collar and ornamental bangs falling to the waist.
