Trained in Murcia, he was a disciple of the painter Germán Hernández Amores. Settling in Madrid in 1869, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and regularly attended the Prado, where he practiced copying classical works.
Early attracted to genre scenes, he soon made them his specialty. In 1877 he devised a new painting process, without oil or varnish, which he presented to the Académie.
In 1880, he moved to Paris. There he drew, and took part in the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition with five drawings of the first chapter of Don Quichotte. He excelled above all in the production of small genre scenes, painted on visiting cards bearing his name; as such, he was a member of the Société des peintres enlumineurs et miniaturistes.
