He debuted at the Salon of French Artists of 1873, with two paintings, Avant le bal and Les preparations du diner3. Towards the end of the 1870s, his taste for naturalism asserted itself and he turned to genre painting with scenes of streets, cafes, markets, in particular that of Les Halles. He obtained a second class medal at the Salon of 1880 and a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. He became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1914. Victor Gilbert equally enjoyed painting the freshness and cheerfulness of the childhood in Paris or in the provinces. Its colors are peaceful, relaxing with happy harmonies. During this period, the child's status finally evolves. Arranged marriage gradually gives way to marriage for love, which will make the newborn child sacred. Victor Gilbert remarkably paints this period of the child king.
